In order to achieve the best % weight loss at pip you first need to know the eggs fresh weight.
If you take the egg when it has just been laid and weigh it that will give you the fresh weight.
But how do you calculate the fresh weight of an egg if they have been incubated by your birds for a period of time?
If you place an egg inside a box that is the length and width of the egg it will a certain % of the volume of the box.
The two images below illustrate this for a long pointed egg and a rounder egg.
The rounder egg fills a larger % of the box.

The volume of the egg can be calculated using the formula
Volume = Kv x Length x ( width x width)
or
V = Kv x LB2
Kv is a coefficient of volume and different for species depending on the shape of their eggs
Round eggs have a higher Kv than longer pointed ones,
The kv value is a representation of the volume of the box they occupy.
For an egg measured in mm a Kv of 0.51 would mean that it occupied 51% of the box drawn around it
For an egg measuring 5.4 x 4.2 cm the volume can be calculated as:
Volume = Kv x 5.4 x ( 4.2 x 4.2 ))
Using the above Kv we get a volume of 48.58 cm3
If we have the volume of the egg then by knowing the density of fresh egg of that species we can calculate the fresh weight
AIMS uses a formula for this which is:
Fresh weight = kw x ( length x ( width x width))
or
Fw = Kw x LB2
The Kw value is a species specific egg weight coefficient which takes into account the shape and density of the egg for that species.
AIMS has a built in database of kw value for a large number of species. These have been calculated for eggs that we have incubated ourselves and others that that have been entered into AIMS over many years by our users and the Kw value is calculated using the formula:
Kw = Fw / LB2
If we have the fresh weight and length and width of an egg we can calculate the Kw value for that egg. Combine a number of these and you have a kw value for the species.
We have a master databases that holds fresh weight and measurement for over 37,000 eggs. This is being added to all the time.
We use this to calculate the Kw values that are used in AIMS.
As you incubate your own eggs and enter fresh weights and measurements AIMS will use that data as well for you and give you female specific Kw value
